The 12 rashis (राशि): your moon sign

Your rashi is the sign the Moon sat in the moment you were born, your janma rashi. Vedic astrology reads the Moon as the mind, so this is treated as your core self. That is why people back home ask for your rashi, not your sun sign.

Moon sign vs sun sign

Two different signs, both yours

The zodiac sign you grew up quoting is your sun sign, built on the Sun and the tropical zodiac. Your rashi runs on the Moon and the sidereal (Lahiri) zodiac. Two different inputs, so the two often land on different signs.

The Moon clears a sign in about two and a quarter days, so your rashi is a much sharper, more personal marker than the slow Sun. Want the sun-sign view instead? Check the 12 zodiac signs.

Your birth date alone won’t tell you

You can’t read your rashi off a calendar. It depends on exactly where the Moon was at your birth, down to the time and place. A full reading works it out from your birth date, time and place and reads it back to you in plain language.
