Mangal Dosha

When Mars sits in one of the marriage-sensitive houses.

Also known as: Manglik Dosha, Kuja Dosha, Bhom Dosha, Bhauma Dosha. Judged from the Ascendant (Lagna), and in common matchmaking also the Moon and Venus.

The short version

Mangal Dosha, also called Manglik Dosha in the north and Kuja Dosha in the south, is one of the most talked-about factors in Indian marriage matching. It is said to form when Mars (Mangal) occupies certain houses in a birth chart.

What is Mangal Dosha?

A person is termed Manglik when Mars is placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house. The houses are usually counted from the Lagna (Ascendant), and in modern matchmaking the same check is also made from the Moon and from Venus. If Mars falls in one of these houses from any of those reference points, the chart is said to carry Mangal Dosha.

The idea behind the dosha is that Mars is a hot, assertive, energetic planet, and when it sits in a house connected to the self, family, home, marriage, longevity or intimacy, its heat is believed to create friction in married life. It is important to know that a raw Manglik flag rarely stands alone. Most charts that show it also carry one of the cancellation conditions below, which is why an astrologer reads the whole chart rather than this single placement.

House by house

What each house means

These are the traditional reads attached to each placement, not fixed outcomes.

1st house

The self and temperament, read as an assertive or short-tempered streak toward a spouse.

2nd house

Family and speech, read as friction in the household and in how things are said.

4th house

Home, mother and domestic peace, read as a disturbed home atmosphere.

7th house

The spouse and marriage itself, considered the most direct placement.

8th house

Longevity, in-laws and marital stability, an emotionally heavy placement in most schools.

12th house

Bed comforts, intimacy and expenses.

The off switch

When it is cancelled

Several recognised conditions are said to cancel or sharply reduce the dosha. Most charts that show it also carry one of these:

  • ·Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn is held to cancel or greatly reduce the dosha.
  • ·Jupiter or Venus conjunct or aspecting Mars, or Jupiter aspecting the 7th house or its lord, is a strong softening factor.
  • ·Saturn placed in one of the same Manglik houses (1, 4, 7, 8, 12) is said to neutralise the dosha in several schools.
  • ·Certain sign placements of Mars carry classical exceptions that cancel the effect.
  • ·When both partners are Manglik, popular belief holds that the dosha cancels out between them.

Straight talk

An honest note

Mangal Dosha is widely checked but just as widely cancelled. Schools disagree on the exact house list (some drop the 2nd house, some count only 1, 4, 7, 8, 12) and on whether to judge from the Moon and Venus as well as the Lagna. The popular rule that the dosha weakens after a certain age is folk belief, not a fixed classical rule. Treat any single Manglik flag as a prompt to read the whole chart, not as a verdict on a marriage.

Tradition says

Traditionally suggested remedies

These are cultural and devotional practices passed down by tradition. They are here for information only, not as guaranteed outcomes, and they are not medical, legal or financial advice.

  • ·Worship of Hanuman and recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa, traditionally suggested for Mars-related concerns.
  • ·Observances or fasting on Tuesdays, the day linked to Mars.
  • ·Kumbh Vivah, a symbolic marriage performed before the actual wedding in some communities.
  • ·Charity of Mars-associated items such as red lentils or copper.
  • ·Wearing red coral only on the specific advice of a qualified astrologer, never by default.

FAQ

Mangal Dosha FAQ

Which houses cause Mangal Dosha?

Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house creates Mangal Dosha in the most common rule, counted from the Lagna, and in matchmaking also from the Moon and Venus. A stricter older school uses only 1, 4, 7, 8 and 12.

Is Manglik Dosha the same as Kuja Dosha?

Yes. Manglik Dosha (north India) and Kuja Dosha (south India) are the same thing. Kuja and Mangal are both names for Mars. It is also called Bhom or Bhauma Dosha.

Can Mangal Dosha be cancelled?

Yes. There are several recognised cancellation conditions, such as Mars in its own or exaltation sign, a strong Jupiter or Venus influence on Mars or the 7th house, or both partners being Manglik. Most charts that show the dosha also carry a cancelling factor.

Does being Manglik mean I cannot marry?

No. Mangal Dosha is one factor among many and is frequently cancelled by other placements. It is a reason to look at the full chart of both people, not a barrier to marriage on its own.
