Sade Sati

Saturn's seven and a half year passage over your Moon sign.

Also known as: Shani Sade Sati, Saturn's seven and a half years. Judged from the natal Moon sign (Janma Rashi).

The short version

Sade Sati is the roughly seven and a half year period when Saturn (Shani) transits the signs around your natal Moon. The name comes from sade saat, meaning seven and a half. It is one of the most discussed transits in Vedic astrology.

What is Sade Sati?

Sade Sati runs while Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs counted from your natal Moon sign, that is, the sign before your Moon sign, your Moon sign itself, and the sign after it. Saturn spends about two and a half years in each sign, so three signs add up to about seven and a half years.

Because it is measured from the Moon and not the Sun or Ascendant, two people born on the same day can be at very different points in their Sade Sati. Saturn is the planet of discipline, time, responsibility and consequence, so the period is traditionally associated with hard lessons, slower progress and a turn toward maturity. It is not a sentence of misfortune. Saturn rewards honest effort, and many people do their most lasting work during these years.

How it unfolds

The three phases

Rising phase (Saturn in the 12th from the Moon)

The first roughly two and a half years. Often linked to rising expenses, a sense of isolation, restlessness of mind and a pull toward letting things go.

Peak phase (Saturn over the natal Moon)

The middle roughly two and a half years, usually considered the most intense. Pressure can fall on the mind, health, career and close relationships, asking for patience and discipline.

Setting phase (Saturn in the 2nd from the Moon)

The final roughly two and a half years. Focus shifts to family, finances and speech, and the pressure gradually eases, with rewards according to one’s conduct.

Straight talk

An honest note

The structure of Sade Sati is well established and consistent across sources: the 12th, 1st and 2nd from the Moon, about seven and a half years, three phases of about two and a half years each, recurring roughly every thirty years. The specific good or bad effects, however, are interpretive and depend on the whole chart, the strength of Saturn and the running dasha. Sade Sati is best understood as a demanding, maturing period rather than a guaranteed run of bad luck. Do not confuse it with the separate two and a half year transits of Saturn over the 4th or 8th from the Moon, known as the small panoti or Dhaiya.
