Gemstone of Ketu
Cat's Eye
Lehsunia
Ketu's stone of insight and protection.
Cat's Eye (Lehsunia) is the gemstone of Ketu, the south lunar node. A stone with a sharp band of light across it, it is traditionally worn during Ketu periods for intuition and protection from sudden loss.
What is Cat's Eye (Lehsunia)?
The Navratna cat's eye is specifically chrysoberyl cat's eye, a very hard stone at about 8.5 on the Mohs scale, whose fine internal fibres create a single moving band of light called chatoyancy. Quartz, tiger's eye and tourmaline cat's eyes are substitutes, not the primary stone.

How to wear Cat's Eye
Cat's eye is set in silver or gold, cleansed in raw cow's milk and clean water, energised by chanting the Ketu beej mantra 108 times, and worn on the middle finger, traditionally in the evening since Ketu has no weekday of its own.
Ketu beej mantra
Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah
Traditionally chanted 108 times to charge the stone before its first wear.
How to spot a real Cat's Eye
- ·A fine cat's eye shows a single sharp band of light that glides as the stone is turned; a fuzzy, doubled or static line suggests an imitation.
- ·Under one light the milk-and-honey effect appears, one side milky-light and the other honey-dark, a strong sign of fine natural chrysoberyl.
- ·Chrysoberyl is very hard at 8.5 and feels dense; light, soft glass imitations show gas bubbles under a loupe.
Substitutes for Cat's Eye (upratna)
The substitutes (upratna) are cat's eye quartz, tiger's eye and cat's eye tourmaline. The quality gap is large, so many authorities advise wearing the primary chrysoberyl cat's eye for Ketu.
Who should wear it
Who it suits, and what to watch
Recommendations depend on Ketu's placement and period. Traditionally avoided if Ketu is in the 6th, 8th or 12th house, and not worn together with Pearl, Ruby or Diamond. A short trial is advised. Wear only on expert advice, traditionally on a Tuesday or Thursday morning.
These are traditional astrological beliefs, not medical, financial or guaranteed outcomes. A gemstone is traditionally read off your whole birth chart, so the right stone for you comes from an actual reading.
