Pearl
Moti
The Moon's stone of calm and emotional balance.
Pearl (Moti) is the gemstone of the Moon (Chandra). A soft white stone, it is traditionally one of the gentlest of the Navratna and is linked to peace of mind and emotional steadiness.
What is Pearl (Moti)?
A pearl is an organic gem grown inside a mollusc from layers of nacre (mother-of-pearl). Natural pearls are rare; most are cultured, where the growth is started by a human-placed bead. Pearls are soft (about 2.5 to 4.5 on the Mohs scale), so they need gentle care. South Sea and basra pearls are the most prized for astrological use.

Pearl benefits
Everything below is what Vedic astrology traditionally believes, sorted by area of life. None of it is medical, financial or guaranteed.
Career and profession
Traditionally favoured for creative, nurturing and public-facing work where emotional steadiness and intuition matter.
Wealth and finances
Said to bring stability through a calmer, clearer mind and better judgement rather than direct wealth, since the Moon governs the mind.
Health and body
Traditionally associated with the Moon's domains of sleep and emotional equilibrium. This is traditional belief, not a medical claim.
Mind and emotions
Its strongest area: believed to calm the mind, ease stress, anxiety and mood swings, and support memory and mental peace.
Relationships
The Moon signifies the mother, so pearl is traditionally said to strengthen the bond with the mother and soften relationships.
How to wear Pearl
Pearls are soft, so they are cleansed gently in raw cow's milk or clean water rather than harsh mixes, set in silver, energised by chanting the Moon's beej mantra 108 times, and worn on the little finger on a Monday.
Moon beej mantra
Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah
Traditionally chanted 108 times to charge the stone before its first wear.
How to spot a real Pearl
- ·Rubbed gently against the tooth edge, real pearls feel slightly gritty; imitations feel smooth and glassy.
- ·Real pearls feel cool and a little heavy at first touch, and show tiny natural surface irregularities under light.
- ·At a drill hole, real pearls show clean nacre layers; fakes show rough edges or a peeling coating.
Substitutes for Pearl (upratna)
The traditional substitutes (upratna) are moonstone (the white or blue-sheen variety) and white coral, worn in place of a natural pearl.
Who should wear it
Who it suits, and what to watch
Considered one of the safest Navratna stones, but if the Moon is already strong it is traditionally said to increase over-sensitivity or moodiness. Wear only after chart analysis by a qualified astrologer.
These are traditional astrological beliefs, not medical, financial or guaranteed outcomes. A gemstone is traditionally read off your whole birth chart, so the right stone for you comes from an actual reading.
