Gemstone of Mercury (Budha)

Emerald

Panna

Mercury's stone of intellect and communication.

Emerald (Panna) is the gemstone of Mercury (Budha). A green stone, it is traditionally linked to intellect, communication and business sense, and is sometimes called the stone of prosperity.

What is Emerald (Panna)?

Emerald is the green variety of the mineral beryl, coloured by chromium and vanadium. It is moderately hard at about 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. Natural emeralds almost always contain inclusions, called the jardin or garden, and most are treated with oil or resin to fill fissures, so the grade of treatment matters.

How to wear Emerald

Emerald is set in gold, cleansed in raw cow's milk and clean water, energised by chanting the Mercury beej mantra 108 times, and worn on the little finger on a Wednesday morning.

Mercury beej mantra

Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah

Traditionally chanted 108 times to charge the stone before its first wear.

How to spot a real Emerald

  • ·A natural emerald almost always shows inclusions (the jardin); a completely clean, inclusion-free stone is usually synthetic or glass.
  • ·At hardness 7.5 to 8 an emerald is harder than glass; glass fakes are lighter and may show round gas bubbles.
  • ·Most natural emeralds are oil or resin treated, so insist on a lab report that discloses the treatment grade.

Substitutes for Emerald (upratna)

The classical substitutes (upratna) are peridot and green tourmaline, with green onyx also cited.
